Love is?

We ask random people throughout New York to tell us what love means to them in one word.

Love, one of the most beautiful feelings that we can experience on this earth. It’s a feeling that so is breathing-taking and divine, that for hundreds years it has been the inspiration for our favorite books, songs, and movies.  For the making of the video, Elon Productions worked with talented collaborator DARVIS as we went around New York City with the intention of asking random people to sum up what love meant to them in one word.

Perhaps we underestimated the complexity of this project figuring that who wouldn’t want to share what love meant to them. The beginning started off to a slow start as people ignored us and some even question if what we were doing was legal. However, as the day went on, we were finding more success and meeting people from all over the world, and of all ages and race. Many of them we found were really excited to have their voice heard. Some of them couldn’t leave and lured us into great conversations about life. It wasn’t the intention of the video, but what we learned was the value of a conversation, especially with a stranger. Perhaps it’s becoming something of a loss art as we find ourselves using technology to try and replace what a face to face conversation does; establishing human connection.

As we began to capture these people one worded response to what love meant to them, it was the seconds before as they thought about their response that spoke loud and clear; The growing smile, the eyes closing, or the soft chuckle. It was clear already what the impact of love had on each of these people. The responses varied from “bullshit” to “divine”. As expected, love was complicated for many people.

Love is a solid and powerful thing, like the bedrock of continents; the deep churning of the oceans; the roots of a tree; the rolling of the hills of the earth. Love does play by its own rules. It is not something that you can turn on and off. It’s not something you can find, and most importantly it’s not something that can be bought. Because no matter the age, religion, race, love is free. Let us remind ourselves that love is free.
